Find out how investing in smart office furniture helped a virtual consultant improve his health and grow his business.

Virtual consulting is an essential part of my business. My life has transformed since I started down this career path. The flexibility and independence are totally worth it.

I am The Consulting Lion; a management consultant and leadership coach. I work remotely from the comfort of the loft in our home, or as my wife likes to call it, “The Lion’s Den.”

However, the life of a virtual consultant can be stressful, especially if you have multiple clients to juggle. It requires long hours sitting, staring at my computer while solving client issues. And after experiencing increased back pain, I started exploring options for a smart office.

Buh-bye old office, hello Autonomous Smart Office

I won’t tell you which company I purchased my old office desk from, but you are probably using some of their products in your current home or office.

After a few months of research and reading various articles, I came to the conclusion that I needed not only a standing desk but a smart one. With so many options available on the market, the ultimate quest was to find one that compliments my work style.

Standing desks can be expensive, so I had to make sure that the one I purchased was cost-effective and will be used properly when I bring it to the Lion’s Den.

While studies typically report a general improvement in health and productivity with standing desks, one of the main draws for me was that it provided a comfortable alternative to sitting. The idea of a smart desk with both standing and sitting capabilities was appealing to me.

All roads led me to Autonomous and their #worksmarter movement. Finally, a company with a sole mission to change the way people work, for the better.

So, just like many of you, I placed my order for the SmartDesk 2 Home Office.

Totally life-changing

When my SmartDesk arrived, I couldn’t wait to unbox it and get it all set up. Was it all hype? Did I overspend on an office desk? Am I going to hate it after a couple of months? These were all the questions going through my head prior to setting up my SmartDesk.

Well, the proof is in the pudding indeed! The answer to all my questions was NO, and I’ll tell you why:

Along with a multitude of other long-term health consequences, sitting all day can cause chronic pain and discomfort, which I experienced first-hand. Since our bodies were not designed to sit all day, doing so causes physical stress that can result in back pain, joint pain, damaged nerves, and chronic headaches. All that physical discomfort can be a major distraction throughout the day, which inhibits productivity.

However, I also learned that not standing appropriately while using a standing desk and improper placement of your monitor could cause health problems as well.

The Mayo Clinic suggests placing the monitor approximately an arm’s length away and directly in front of you. The top of the screen should be at or just below eye level. For those working with two monitors, it is important to adjust your setup based on how you prioritize the screens.

Following these recommendations from Mayo Clinic, I was able to set up the proper office ergonomics for my SmartDesk 2 Home Office.

Due to my back pain issues, I knew that investing in a sit-stand desk was my best option. Being that I’ve only had sitting desks in the past, I knew that switching to a stand-only desk will likely be too much of a physical change for an entire day of work.

I needed to have a balance throughout my workday; stand for a few hours, sit when I feel the need to, and vice-versa.

Research that appeared in Applied Ergonomics found that in most cases, implementing sit-stand desks in workstations led to lower levels of body discomfort, and it found that productivity improved or remained the same in most instances. Providing the opportunity to change settings contributes to the sit-stand desk’s ability to reduce pain and discomfort and possibly improve productivity.

With my Autonomous electric standing desk, I am quickly able to alternate between desired height settings. This helps me adjust for comfort throughout the daily grind.

Most importantly, my overall energy level has increased due to standing and moving in small bursts throughout the day. And being on my feet also increases my alertness, which helps me focus, concentration, and attention to detail.

My monthly average client happiness level and NPS score jumped from 8.5 to 9.5 in a matter of weeks.

Conclusion

Standing desks are designed to improve your productivity and overall health. These benefits are real and true.

For some switching to a standing desk, the transition from sedentary work might be difficult because of foot, back or other types of pain that might arise from the sudden change in work style.

However, you will find that standing desks make you more alert, providing you with more energy throughout the day. Sitting can send a signal to your body that it’s time to relax whereas standing up sends a signal that it’s time to get busy, at least it does for me!
